TIP d. New Era, 60-49

MANILA – Cheered by their home fans, Technological Institute of the Philippines staged a furious rally in the final period to upstage visiting New Era University, 60-49, at the resumption of the 25th Sta. Lucia Land National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) games Tuesday morning.  The Engineers rallied from as much as 13 points down just before halftime, 25-12, with center Jay Gadon and guard Terrence Matignas delivering the crucial shots to frustrate the Hunters.

TIP’s collective patience paid off as they scored the first seven points of the fourth with Gadon giving them the lead for the first time since the opening period and 6:27 to go in the game, 43-41.  Dexter Castillo would then tie the game for the last time, 43-43, and the Engineers responded by rattling off eight unanswered points through triples from Matignas and John Martin Palisoc plus a basket from Jorey Napoles to defuse the threat and coast to the win with still over three minutes on the clock, 51-43.

Gadon was a force on both ends of the floor with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Matignas topped TIP with 11 of his 14 points coming in the second half.  The Engineers’ defense actually limited the Hunters to only two points in the first five minutes of the final period and eight overall.

Jeff Comia, a call up from the New Era Junior Hunters, showed he can ball with the Seniors by pouring in 19 points.  Sadly, he lacked support from his teammates especially in the second half with Castillo chipping in seven and Richard Velchez adding six points and hauling 12 rebounds.
